We feel that short breaks are very important for children and young people with learning disabilities and their families. Mayfield Children’s Home benefits from having a dedicated short breaks house on-site and we are proud of our respite house and the benefits that arise from having such a provision.
‘Primrose’ House has enough space for up to two young people at any one time.
Short breaks give young people with disabilities the opportunity to experience activities outside of their family environment and often involve activities they wouldn’t normally take part in. Fully supported community based activities are encouraged to create opportunities for each young person to gain life experiences such as eating out, going to the cinema as well as swimming and other sporting activities whilst having fun, trying new activities, gain independence and make friends.
Short breaks offer the additional benefit of enabling the young person’s family to have a break too, to have some time to themselves and spend time with other family members. These visits can last just a few hours, a day, overnight, the weekend or even longer – any duration really.
Our respite service is run by a highly trained staffing team who are experienced in working with a variety of needs.
We can provide a range of innovative short break options for children and young people. Our services are flexible and can be tailored to meet individual needs.
Each child that comes to Mayfield undergoes a comprehensive assessment to ensure their needs can be met. The Respite Co-ordinator will meet with the young person and their parents prior to any placement.
